About Klean Kanteen

Klean Kanteen is an American reusable drinkware brand known for its stainless-steel water bottles, insulated bottles, tumblers and food containers.

The company partnered with WPIC to assess the opportunity for its products in China and develop an e-commerce market-entry strategy built around local consumer demand.

Finding the Right Entry Point in China

Before committing to a China launch, Klean Kanteen needed a clearer picture of the market.

The first priority was understanding the size and structure of China’s online drinkware category, including which products were gaining traction, how competing brands were positioned and where Klean Kanteen could differentiate.

The analysis also needed to answer a more practical question: which products should the brand lead with?

Rather than bringing its entire international assortment into China, Klean Kanteen wanted its launch strategy to reflect what Chinese consumers were already searching for and buying.

Using Market Data to Shape the Launch

WPIC used Discripto®, our proprietary e-commerce data and analytics technology, to analyse the outdoor accessories and drinkware market across major Chinese online channels.

The research pointed to wide-mouth insulated bottles and food containers as particularly strong opportunities for the brand.

It also uncovered demand among health-conscious parents looking for safe products for children, creating a secondary opportunity for locally relevant children’s drinkware.

Competitive analysis identified another opening. Several established competitors lacked a strong presence on Tmall, giving Klean Kanteen an opportunity to establish a more prominent official e-commerce presence.

Based on these findings, WPIC recommended launching a Tmall flagship store supported by a broader digital marketing strategy.

Launching and Building the Brand Online

WPIC designed and launched Klean Kanteen’s Tmall flagship store, localised the product assortment and introduced the products identified as having the strongest market potential.

Wide-mouth insulated bottles were positioned as the initial hero products, while marketing content helped Chinese consumers understand less familiar formats such as growlers and tumblers.

To build awareness, WPIC worked with KOLs and micro-KOLs whose audiences aligned with the brand’s target consumers. Campaigns positioned Klean Kanteen around quality, design, and lifestyle rather than competing primarily on price.

WPIC also worked on organic search visibility and expanded the brand’s reach through additional B2B opportunities within the JD.com and Alibaba ecosystems.

Creating a Stronger Market Entry

The initial market analysis gave Klean Kanteen the evidence needed to move ahead with its China e-commerce launch and, importantly, helped determine what to sell, where to sell it and how to position the brand.

Klean Kanteen subsequently launched its official Tmall presence with a product assortment informed by observed Chinese consumer demand rather than simply replicating its overseas catalogue.

The project combined market intelligence, localisation, e-commerce operations, and digital marketing into a single market-entry strategy, giving the brand an established foundation for selling its reusable drinkware in China.
